Babies Made by Designers ?

To answer the title, no, Designer Babies are not the new fashion trend being made by the top designers of the world.

Designer Babies is actually the term used for the babies whose genetic makeup had been artificially selected according the parents' preference. This means, that the parents could basically choose how their child is going to look like. From the eye color, hair color, etc., it could all be in their control. Along with choosing different traits, this process is combined with In Vitro Fertilization. In Vitro Fertilization is when an egg cell is fertilized by the sperm outside of the body. Once the egg is fertilized, that is the time to modify it's genetic traits.

Designer Babies have many pros and cons. The process of designing your own baby can not just let you pick your child's features, but it can also determine the the genetic diseases your child could inherit. By knowing this information, modifications can be made so that this inheritance would not occur. This is a great way to insure that your child will not develop anything that you might not want him or her to suffer with.
But although this whole idea of designing your own baby seems so amazing, there are also many cons to this concept. Many embryos can be terminated, because of such a high chance they might not survive the process of In Vitro Fertilization. Designer Babies are also objected against of many religious reasons. It is pretty evident that Designer Babies are not natural, since their characteristics have been tempered with. Many people believe humans do not have the right to do this, for the reason that God made everyone in His own way, and we should not get in the way of that. With this also comes economical issues. Designing your own baby would not come cheap. And is it really worth it to spend thousands of dollars on equipment and such, for something that most people cannot afford?

Right now, using the process of Designer Babies on humans is illegal. I personally think it should stay this way. It seems that the whole plan towards Designer Babies has more cons than pros, making it more of a negative idea. I think the biggest concern there is about Designer Babies are more associated with religion. Not many religions would approve of such technology that would modify what your children would look like, instead of just leaving them to what God designed to be.
All in all, the outlook on the process of Designer Babies does not seem very positive. Traits and genes of a human being just isn't something that was meant to be played with. Designing Babies may be great for games and such, but it should keep away from actually happening in reality.
