What are humans doing to make a positive impact on world issue ?
There are many organizations that help contribute to the issues of the world. One of the most known organizations that help the environment is called Greenpeace.
Greenpeace is was officially founded in 1970, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This organization was all started during the 1960s. The US government had plans of detonating a nuclear bomb on Amchitka Island, Alaska. Many people protested against this, but the US government ended up going through with their plans anyways. After the results of the first bomb were seen to be clear of tsunamis or earthquakes, the US government decided to detonate another nuclear bomb on Amchitka, but five times stronger. This plan really brought on the protests, as Canadians opposed this idea, as it would just contaminate their environments, and harm all of the living creatures on the island, including otters, bald eagles, and also peregrine falcons. The group of protesters called themselves the "Don't Make A Wave Committee", referring to the tidal way that could result from the nuclear testings. The "committee" gained a lot of attention, and eventually got support from the Sierra Club. They made a plan of sailing a charter boat through the site where the nuclear tests were being deployed, to help stall the whole project. All the people who joined flashed signs to the testing crew, one sign saying "make it a green peace", which was the name that stuck onto the whole committee. Even though Greenpeace failed to reach their goal and stop the US government of their nuclear testings, they still made a huge impact on the world. They gained much attention from the media, and helped bring awareness to the public about the dangers of nuclear testing.
Over the years, Greenpeace has held many different campaigns in order to educate the public more on the topics of helping make the world a healthier environment. The number one issue that Greenpeace is handling right now is Global Warming. They are taking charge in giving their concerns to the bigger industries who are responsible for deforestation, coal power plants, oil and petroleum extractions, and many more actions that contribute to harming the Earth's natural environment.
Greenpeace has also helped with saving the lives of many animals across the world. One of the major animals they help with are whales. There are many species of whales all over the world, yet their total population is decreasing every year. There are many hunters who kill whales just to use for sales, knowing that products that come from whales are very pricey. Greenpeace has a whole campaign dedicated to just whales. They help spread the word of whales going endangered, which helps the economy to decrease the amount of whales that are killed every year.
Greenpeace is like Mother Nature's own army. They help the natural world we live in, so that it may stay longer. They put much effort into maintaining a healthy, green world for us. It's time we use our own effort, and help the Earth as well.
