Dr. Technology

Medical Technology is an on-going development of tools that help us with medicinal care and maintenance. It can help us see inside our bodies, which cannot be done with just using just your eyes. The different available technologies have been developed over the years, and to this day are still being upgraded. Medical Technology has become an important part of life as it plays the lead roles of keeping track of our bodies' health.

Some of the very first medical devices invented were the opthalmoscope, laryngoscope, and the x-ray, made between the 19th and 20th century. As the years progressed these inventions have been tottered with, and upgraded to much more effective tools. Many other devices have also been made to see internally such as the ultrasound. It gives the use of viewing organs within your body. It is especially used to see growing babies inside a pregnant woman. The baby can be monitored from when it is just a fetus until it is ready to be born. This helps doctors and the parents see how the developing fetus is doing, and if anything is wrong. Aside from being helpful during pregnancies, ultrasounds are also capable of seeing muscles, tendons, and many other internal organs. This device can be used to see if a certain organ is not in its normal size or structure, which usually means it should be checked out in further detail. The ultrasound is a very useful tool for viewing internal organs.

There are also many devices that contribute to monitoring the heart. They observes the hearts many actions. Defibrillators, artificial pacemakers, and the heart rate monitor are just a few examples of medical devices that have been invented to witness the heart's many movements. The heart is a very important part of our bodies. It is the main organ that we need to live, so we need to make sure everything is working properly. From the rhythm of the heart's beating, to the amount of blood it pumps. All of these devices help monitor the heart if anything looks like it's not working properly.
Canadians are very committed to helping out as much as they can with the health of people. Medical devices are accessible to help, without many exceptions. Medical professionals are always available to help those who need attention. Medical technology has grown to be such an important part of saving lives. The length it tak
es our knowledge about our health to is such a strong skill we have now obtained with these devices.

Industrial or Sustainable Agriculture - Which is the way to go ?

First of all, let's be clear of what Industrial and Sustainable Agriculture are.
Industrial Agriculture is the term given to the form of farming that has been developed over the years. This is not just any type of farming though. Industrial Farming is the more modern, and developed way to grow crops or raise livestock. It contains machines and chemicals that help crops and livestock grow at a faster rate. Industrial Agriculture is more ideal for the economy. It gets more produce faster, and at a lower price than organic foods that have been grown naturally. This why people are so drawn into the whole idea of getting foods that have been produced by Industrial Agriculture. Nowadays, money is very tight, and people can't really waste money on getting "organic food". As long as its there and cheap, it's the path people decide to take.

Sustainable Agriculture, on the other hand, is basically the opposite of Industrial Agriculture. This is the natural way to go. The produce grown this way contain no added chemicals. They are grown with natural sunlight, natural soil, are watered with natural water, and are fertilized naturally with recycled crop waste or treated human manure. There are no pesticides to make them grow faster or anything unnatural in them. They take their time to grow, not being rushed by anything. But even though there are so many great things to being natural , it also comes with its downsides. Unfortunately, organic crops and livestock are much more expensive than the foods grown from industrial agriculture. Because of this factor, people prefer to purchase non-organic foods, because it gives you what you need without having to pay a fortune when you go grocery shopping.

Sacrificing Sustainable Agriculture so that there could be more focus on Industrial Agriculture, isn't worth risking the extinction of the different plant and animal species. There aren't enough benefits that could come out of having Industrial Agriculture alone. There are more cons than pros. Industrial Agriculture MAY be produced faster and is sold cheaper, but it could actually harm your body. The fact that it's not grown naturally is already a sign that it's not very healthy for you. Diseases and abnormalities are effects that industrial agriculture could bring you. For example, the industrial pesticides used for fast growing can decrease the sperm count in a males, and cause many other genital defects. Herbicides, a chemical used for this agriculture, are linked to cancer and other neurological problems. Antibiotics that are fed to livestock have created antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which lower the strength of peoples immune systems.
Products that come from Sustainable Agriculture might be a bit more expensive, but they do come with their benefits. The grown plants have natural vitamins and minerals that aren't mixed with any harmful pesticides. The livestock are fed real food and are grown with time, not any chemicals.

I like to think of it this way: Sustainable Agriculture produces real food, and Industrial
Agriculture produces fake food.

Babies Made by Designers ?

To answer the title, no, Designer Babies are not the new fashion trend being made by the top designers of the world.

Designer Babies is actually the term used for the babies whose genetic makeup had been artificially selected according the parents' preference. This means, that the parents could basically choose how their child is going to look like. From the eye color, hair color, etc., it could all be in their control. Along with choosing different traits, this process is combined with In Vitro Fertilization. In Vitro Fertilization is when an egg cell is fertilized by the sperm outside of the body. Once the egg is fertilized, that is the time to modify it's genetic traits.

Designer Babies have many pros and cons. The process of designing your own baby can not just let you pick your child's features, but it can also determine the the genetic diseases your child could inherit. By knowing this information, modifications can be made so that this inheritance would not occur. This is a great way to insure that your child will not develop anything that you might not want him or her to suffer with.
But although this whole idea of designing your own baby seems so amazing, there are also many cons to this concept. Many embryos can be terminated, because of such a high chance they might not survive the process of In Vitro Fertilization. Designer Babies are also objected against of many religious reasons. It is pretty evident that Designer Babies are not natural, since their characteristics have been tempered with. Many people believe humans do not have the right to do this, for the reason that God made everyone in His own way, and we should not get in the way of that. With this also comes economical issues. Designing your own baby would not come cheap. And is it really worth it to spend thousands of dollars on equipment and such, for something that most people cannot afford?

Right now, using the process of Designer Babies on humans is illegal. I personally think it should stay this way. It seems that the whole plan towards Designer Babies has more cons than pros, making it more of a negative idea. I think the biggest concern there is about Designer Babies are more associated with religion. Not many religions would approve of such technology that would modify what your children would look like, instead of just leaving them to what God designed to be.
All in all, the outlook on the process of Designer Babies does not seem very positive. Traits and genes of a human being just isn't something that was meant to be played with. Designing Babies may be great for games and such, but it should keep away from actually happening in reality.
